From wet sludge to dry granulate – in a container

One container. One integrated heat pump. No external heat source.

What makes the HUBER Cold Air Dryer HPS® interesting is not simply that it dries sludge. It is the way it does it – and what that can mean for wastewater treatment plant operation.

After mechanical dewatering, the sludge still contains a considerable amount of water. With HPS®, the dry solids content can be increased significantly, reducing both volume and the total amount of sludge requiring further handling.

Higher dry solids content changes the equation

HPS® operates at approx. 40–50 °C and uses integrated heat pump technology. This means the solution does not depend on access to external waste heat.

Each drying module can evaporate around 50 kg of water per hour, and the system can be configured with 1–5 modules. Capacity can therefore be adapted to the needs of the individual treatment plant.

A higher dry solids content affects the entire downstream sludge handling process. When both volume and mass are reduced, this has an impact on storage, transport and final disposal – and therefore on the overall sludge economy.

A solution designed to fit into the existing sludge line

HPS® is containerised, compact and relocatable. It can be integrated downstream of mechanical sludge dewatering and, for example, installed directly after a HUBER Q-PRESS®.

This means dewatering, conveying and drying can be considered as one integrated process.

And that is exactly how we approach the solution: not as a standalone dryer, but as part of the complete sludge line.

The modular design also makes HPS® relevant for small and medium-sized wastewater treatment plants where a traditional drying solution may require more space, building work and energy infrastructure.

What does this mean in practice?

When HPS® is integrated into the sludge line, the key benefits include:

  • Less volume for storage and internal handling
  • Lower mass for transport
  • Reduced amount for final disposal
  • No dependency on external waste heat
  • Modular capacity adapted to the plant’s requirements
  • The possibility to integrate dewatering, conveying and drying into one process

What could HPS® mean for your plant?

That depends on factors such as sludge volumes, dry solids content after dewatering, operating hours, energy conditions and transport and disposal costs.

We would be happy to review your specific plant and assess how HPS® could be integrated into the overall sludge line.
