Did you know that you have access to a free and unlimited source of energy?

Due to the current climate and energy crisis, the need for a safe, environmentally friendly and economically attractive energy source is more urgent than ever.

Municipal wastewater is a free and virtually unlimited source of energy that lies untapped; HUBER's Heat Exchanger RoWin unit is specifically designed to harness this free energy source.

FACTS

Advantages of the RoWin Heat Exchanger unit:

  • Access to wastewater is largely unrestricted. Wastewater is a free and easily accessible heat source;

  • Recycling heat energy from wastewater saves costs; energy costs for heating and cooling can be reduced by up to 80% compared to conventional methods;

  • Huber's Heat Exchanger RoWin unit improves sustainability and is environmentally friendly;

  • It requires minimal construction and intervention in the existing sewer system;

  • Using heat exchangers in wastewater reduces fossil fuel use and reduces emissions and the carbon footprint;

  • The system also saves water that would otherwise evaporate in cooling towers;

  • It avoids using cooling tower cleaning chemicals and pollution of the environment.

Wastewater is the ideal energy source

Heat pumps use environmentally friendly energy sources, usually groundwater or air, but both have the disadvantage that their energy level decreases in winter and increases in summer. On the other hand, wastewater has enormous heating potential, even during cold months.

Shower and washing water ensure that the temperature level in the sewer rarely falls below 12°C. In summer, the soil acts as insulation against heat and ensures that the maximum temperature does not exceed about 20°C. This narrow range between minimum and maximum values makes municipal wastewater ideal for heat pump operation.

The reason why wastewater heat recovery is still relatively unused is probably that coarse screenings and the pollutants in the wastewater impair the function of heat pumps, and treatment is considered an unnecessary expense.

FACTS
There is huge potential in energy from wastewater; for example, wastewater can cover about 64% of the energy needs of all commercial buildings in the German city of Munich.
The calculation is as follows:
Population: 1.4 million

Wastewater: 1,800,000 m3/d

Energy demand, commercial buildings: ~6,000

Possible energy from wastewater: 3,832 at 5°C. Δt GWh/a

Which gives ~64% of energy demand that can be met from existing potential

Handling screenings

HUBER's Heat Exchanger RoWin unit was developed by specialists with an entirely different approach: transferring the energy in the wastewater to a medium suitable for driving heat pumps. The patented HUBER ThermWin® system includes not only the RoWin heat exchanger but also optimised wastewater supply.

A tangential shaft installed near the wastewater collector both ensures that wastewater can flow into the shaft by gravity and acts as an intermediate storage tank for the pump feeding the HUBER Heat Exchanger RoWin unit.

If the heat exchanger is installed directly at the customer (hospitals, industries, etc.), a HUBER ROTAMAT® Pump Station Screen RoK4 is installed, which handles the filtration of the wastewater and protects the HUBER RoWin® system from coarse screenings. The material retained by the RoK4 screen is returned downstream to the sewer with the cooled wastewater.

FACTS

A continuous waste water flow of at least 5 litres per second is required to ensure effective heat recovery.
The temperature of the wastewater must not fall below 10°C.

Prevention against biofilm

To prevent a reduction of heat transfer due to biofilm on the exchange pipes, HUBER's RoWin is fitted with a cleaning system, which cleans the surface of the pipes at a fixed interval and therefore prevents the growth of biofilm.

Such preventive cleaning guarantees a constant high heat transfer.

The core of HUBER's Heat Exchanger RoWin unit lies inside the system as custom-made exchanger pipes that guarantee ideal heat transfer. The compact design ensures an optimal flow around the pipes. The basic HUBER RoWin version consists of a tank that integrates the pipe modules and can be installed virtually anywhere.

Due to its modular design, the RoWin Heat Exchanger can be adapted to meet specific on-site requirements. The pipe modules can be installed in a tank, keeping all options open.
